Kahn possessed a keen interest in both art and biology from an early age. In the 6th grade, she received a microscope for her birthday and begin painting lessons, ultimately leading to an in-depth education in both arenas. She studied oil painting and drawing with Ann Didusch Schuler, an atelier training in Old Masters techniques, at the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore, along with “en plein air” outside watercolor painting with Fritz Shuler Briggs.

While earning her PhD in Developmental Neurobiology and Neurochemistry at the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine, and continued to study art at MICA in Baltimore. During her her robust career biological science, drawing always remained an important component of Kahn’s life. She spent time in 2007 in Italy painting with Israel Hershberg of the Jerusalem Studio School. A solo exhibit at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library of the Johns Hopkins University culminated this period of her career.

Kahn is represented by San Francisco Women’s Gallery and participates in San Francisco Open Studios.

Artist Carrie Kahn Studio Taos

Kahn cites artists Barry Nemett, a student of William Bailey, and Dan Dudrow as influences. Her practice employs oil based media (paints and sticks), watercolor, collage and drawing. Her still life and landscape images develop magical thinking, incorporating creative liberties in to realistic scenes. 

She is represented by the San Francisco Women's Gallery, participates in San Francisco Open Studios, and committed full time to her art — splitting her time between her studios in in San Francisco’s Dogpatch and Taos New Mexico.
